The Old Growth Challenge, Island Lake Lodge

September 10th at 2006 is one of Fernie’s most challenging and exhilarating races, the Old Growth Challenge at Island lake Lodge. Imagine the excitement as racers of all intensities line the start to embark on a three-part event that has many thinking “how did I get into this?” Curious spectators snap photos and yell cheers of encouragement as the first part of this triathlon-style race begins. 100’s of feet head away from the lodge and up the side of the infamous Baldy Loop for a 10.1km “hike.” Sure, this is a common and enjoyable route for hikers, and boasts a view unlike anything you have ever seen, but do not be fooled. This is far from a hike…the competition drives those involved to break into a run and for those that can continue to fill their lungs with oxygen while climbing at that altitude, a run the whole 10.1km.

After approximately an hour, the first of the racers fly into a field in front of the Tamarack Lodge and either hand their bracelet to a teammate, or jump on a bike themselves to head down the mountain. Racers then follow the steep and narrow shortcuts that cut through the Island Lake Lodge road at full speed to the bottom, and then towards the power line to climb back up to the lodge. This leg of the race may sound less intense, and it is true that the pain doesn’t last as long as the hike, but difficult it is. If you have never experienced climbing the powerline in Fernie, there is no way for its impossibly steep scale to be illustrated.

Around twenty minutes later, bikers slowly begin to pile into the field and drop their bikes for the final leg of the Old Growth Challenge, a run around the lake. For some, this is the end and they can relish in all the Gatorade and water their bodies require to replenish the energy and fluid they have expelled. For others, five km of chip trails lie between themselves and the much anticipated finish line. They head to the beautiful Fir Trail that loops Island Lake, and keep their minds focused as in just a few minutes victory will prevail.
Once across the finish line and greeted by team members, friends and family, jovial, perspiring competitors head to the Tamarack Lodge to indulge in a well earned buffet and to celebrate an epic accomplishment. This feast is a true reward. Prepared by the renowned chefs at Island Lake Lodge, the fresh, satisfying spread offers something for everyone and keeps you coming back for more.
The Old Growth Challenge grows in numbers each year as more Fernie locals and visitors from all over the world fall in love with Island Lake Lodge and its surroundings. Whether you’re interested in a fun, team adventure, a solo competitive challenge or even a cool beverage on the patio while watching the event unfold, the Old Growth Challenge at Island Lake Lodge is definitely worth the effort.
