RARE CULTURAL EVENT COMES TO FERNIE

The Fernie and District Arts Council (FDAC) has secured a rare cultural event that will provide an opportunity for the public to learn, first hand, about precious Buddhist traditions and practices. From August 11 through August 18, 2002, a group of seven Tibetan monks from the Gaden Jangste Monastery in Mundgod, India will engage in a variety of cultural events celebrating the peaceful and philosophical heritage of the Buddhist religion.

The monks are touring North America to raise funds for the interior finishing of their new prayer hall at the Gaden Jangste Monastery, including the making of thousands of sacred statues of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and Gurus.

Tibetans fled persecution and sought sanctuary in India on land donated by the Indian government. Since that time, monks have toured the world educating people about Buddhist culture and raising funds to rebuild their temples and monasteries.

The Fernie & District Arts Council is dedicated to increasing and broadening the opportunities for residents of the District of Fernie to enjoy and participate in cultural activities; promoting individual creativity; encouraging artistic work; and promoting public interest and raising public awareness of local art and artists.
