Sunshine
After receiving mass amounts of snow this week, the valley sparkled in the sunlight and the streets and mountains were packed with cheerful people all weekend long. Saturday was a late start for our group so we opted out of skiing and hiked the snow covered bike trails behind Ridgemont. There have been so many snow shoers, cross country skiers and hikers on these trails that a pair of trail runners or hiking boots were fine for the hike/run. Side Winder led us to the clear cut, and a great view of the ski hill, Mount Fernie and downtown Fernie. The peace, solitude and panorama were worth our exertion.
An earlier start on Sunday aloud us time to prepare for a day at Fernie Alpine Resort. With the sun shining down on us, all we could talk about was how amazing spring skiing will be with such a great base! The groomers were fast and soft, no ice to be found, and with each chair lift we excitedly decided the next run.

First was Cedar Centre. Making large GS turns, our speedy course down the run, through the gully and to the haul back was exhilarating. We traversed to the bottom of Boomerang Ridge and looked up to see a very steep and groomed upper Boomerang Ridge! How FAR accomplished this feat was beyond us, but it didn’t matter…it was there to conquer. The boys decided to ski it for the next run, while I decided to ski upper North Ridge and cut across via Linda’s Run Trail to watch them fly by. The way up the chair, they discussed their strategy, deciding to check their speed to avoid getting out of control in the speed trap. The boys executed it effortlessly and off we went in search of more long and fast groomers. Cascade, Bear and Arrow were all equally wonderful. While we were able to speed along, we were cautious as all levels of skiers enjoy these runs. Timing our descent to avoid busy runs worked well and our day filled up swiftly, fast run after run.
With conditions such as these, skiing for the last month of the season is set to be amazing. Get out there and be prepared for a fabulous goggle tan this spring!
