Goggle Tans
Skiing this past weekend definitely fell into the “spring” category. Sunny days, goggle tans, beer on the deck, hikes to Polar Peak and the Free Ski Competition were integral to the experience at Fernie Alpine Resort. Searches for steep and deep powder are no longer the mission, rather steep and fast, and hopefully soft runs. It’s more fun than expected, not only do you get to ski the runs you usually avoid because they are skied out and busy, (Cascade, Cedar Centre, North Ridge etc.) you get to see a new side of the runs you grew up skiing as you get to ski their pitch and length fast and effortlessly.

These days also tend to comprise of randomly running into friends and acquaintances and taking runs together. Normally mid-season you are sneaking away to secret stashes or powder and avoiding most people to continue your streak of first tracks, but spring weather tends to leave skiers in packs. Hiking the peaks, watching the impressive Free Ski Comp off the head wall, or having a few beverages on the Griz Pub deck, all packs were fulfilled this weekend.
While the powder days were some for the books this season, spring skiing is being welcomed with open arms, and people are wearing their deep goggle tans proudly in the town of Fernie. With days such as Hot Dog Day and the Powder Peddle Powder still ahead in the season, there is much more to be enjoyed.
