East Kootenay Environmental Society Protecting the natural legacy of BC's Southern Rockies The East Kootenay Environmental Society works to protect the diversity of wildlife habitats, the wild lands, the air, the water and the quality of life of southeastern British Columbia. We work collaboratively with other groups, with businesses, and with governments to find solutions for environmental protection.
Elk Valley Bear Aware Bear Aware is an initiative to reduce bear-human conflicts in residential areas through community-based education programs. The Elk Valley Bear Aware Program serves the communities of Fernie, Sparwood and Elkford. Guided by the British Columbia Conservation Foundation, the Bear Aware program promotes practices that improve public safety and respect for wild bears. The Elk Valley Writers' Guild part of the Fernie and District Arts Council, meets to share and critique our literary outpourings. Our informal, yet loosely structured meetings are fun - we usually have snacks and sometimes enjoy wine. Newcomers are welcome to visit/participate. Members are provided access to a number of benefits & services that can significantly enhance the financial situation of their operation. We also represent the business community when dealing with all levels of government on issues that affect business. Education and training are also key to our members.
The Fernie Ghostriders Jr "B" Hockey Club A group of 23 young men who give their heart and soul every game in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. The small Fernie Memorial Arena is a loud "Barn" when the Ghostriders take on the opposing teams. The Ghostrider's hockey season is September to March.
The Rocky Mountain Grizzly Centre Located in a Rocky Mountain wilderness that supports a significant grizzly population, the Fernie-based Rocky Mountain Grizzly Centre will collect, assimilate, and disseminate scientific data to be used in support of research, education and interpretation that benefits the grizzly bear, humans and the environment of the southern Rockies. contact: info@grizzlycentre.com
